A Fun & Stress-Free Guide for Parents

Cake smash sessions are a fun, messy, and adorable way to celebrate your little one’s milestone.
To make sure your session runs smoothly and stress-free, here’s everything you need to know before the big day.

What to Expect

Cake smash sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes. We start with some cake-free photos, capturing sweet moments of your little one before they get messy.

Once I’ve gotten the shots I need, we bring out the cake. If your child isn’t a fan of the cake, don’t worry—this happens sometimes. I have spoons on hand to encourage them to "dig in," and you can bring a small snack (like puffs or Cheerios) to hide in the back of the cake, making it look like they’re eating it.

The goal is to have fun and capture adorable expressions, whether they’re smashing the cake or just curiously poking at it.

Picking the Perfect Outfit

I have a small selection of outfits that you’re welcome to choose from, but if you’re bringing your own, here are some tips:

  • Simple is best – Avoid busy patterns that might distract from your baby’s expressions.
  • Coordinating colors – Match the outfit to your chosen theme or color scheme.
  • Barefoot is adorable – Tiny toes in the cake always make for the cutest photos.

If your baby arrives in their cake smash outfit, be sure to bring backup clothes for a mess-free ride home.

The Perfect Cake – We've Got You Covered

No need to worry about bringing a cake—I supply it through a trusted local baker. This ensures:

  • A soft, baby-friendly cake that's easy to smash
  • Light, fluffy frosting (no tough fondant or sprinkles)
  • A design that complements your session’s theme

If your little one has any allergies or dietary restrictions, just let me know in advance so we can adjust accordingly.

Timing is Everything

We want your little one to be in the best mood possible. Here are some ways to set them up for success:

  • Schedule around naps – A well-rested baby is a happy baby.
  • Give a light snack before the session – A hungry baby might not be in the mood to smash cake.
  • Avoid introducing new foods – Stick to familiar flavours to prevent tummy troubles.

Bringing the Essentials

Here’s what to pack for a stress-free session:

  • Wipes and towels – I have a sink available for easy cleanup after the cake smash.
  • Sippy cup with water – Keep your little one hydrated throughout the session.
  • Extra outfit for baby – If they arrive in their cake smash outfit, bring backup clothes for the ride home.
  • Small snacks – Like puffs or Cheerios in case your baby isn’t feeling the cake. These can be hidden in the cake to encourage eating.
  • Extra outfit for parents – You might need to reposition your little one, and that can get messy. A backup outfit is a good idea just in case.

Siblings and Other Family Members

I know how exciting this session is, but to keep the focus on your little one, please leave siblings and extra family members at home.

Babies this age can be easily distracted, and I need their attention on me to capture all those adorable moments.
